L.A. Times gets public service Pulitzer
New York, NY, Apr. 5 (UPI) -- New York's Columbia University has given its coveted annual Pulitzer Prize awards and the public service honor went to the Los Angeles Times.
The Times, owned by the Tribune Co., won the public service prize for an investigative series on an area hospital's atrocious healthcare -- without citing a single confidential source.
The Pulitzer committee also awarded prizes in the international-reporting category to two Tribune papers: The Los Angeles Times for coverage of Russia, and Newsday of Melville, N.Y., for coverage of Rwanda.
The Wall Street Journal, owned by Dow Jones & Co., also won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for its film reviews and another for its coverage of cancer survivors.
Pulitzers are given annually in 14 journalism categories and seven arts categories.
